About Ayurveda

Ayurveda is a holistic system of healing that originated in ancient India over 5,000 years ago.1 The word Ayurveda is a Sanskrit term which translates as the science of life - Ayur means life, Veda means knowledge.2 As a healing system, Ayurveda is often considered to be the medical branch of Yoga.3

As a natural healing system, the goal of Ayurveda is to support the body and mind through the process of self-healing with non-invasive natural ayurvedic herbs, ayurvedic medicines, and ayurvedic treatments. However, the first line of ayurvedic treatment for illness and disease is proper diet and lifestyle. Once this has been established, ayurvedic herbs are administered - followed by medicines and treatments considered appropriate for one's own unique bodily constitution, known in Ayurveda as Prakruti.

Ayurveda has a very deep understanding of the body's energy systems through it's foundational doshic theory which considers that the human body is governed by the three bodily dosha's (energies) Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

Ayurveda teaches that the Five Great Elements found in the universe (ether, air, fire, water, earth) are contained within the human body as energies called Vata Dosha (ether and air), Pitta Dosha (fire), and Kapha Dosha (water and earth.)

Ayurveda's Purpose

The purpose of Ayurveda is to protect the health of the healthy person and to alleviate disorders in the diseased person. (Charaka Samhita, 30.26)

Ayurveda defines health as: one who is established in Self, who has balanced doshas, balanced agni (digestive fire), properly formed dhatus (tissues), proper elimination of malas (urine, feces, sweat), well functioning bodily processes, and whose mind, soul, and senses are full of bliss, is called a healthy person. (Sushruta Samhita, 15.38)

Smartphones and Dosha Imbalance

In addition to the harmful health effects associated with mobile phone radiation, smartphone lifestyle choices and behaviors can imbalance the doshas – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

The smartphone, as it is used by most people, helps the user to maintain a chaotic and often desperately addictive lifestyle. The smartphone allows the user to engage in lifestyle choices that are contrary to the teaching and wisdom of ayurveda for balancing the doshas.

The gunas typically associated with smartphone use are:

For example, Vata imbalances are created by using the smartphone to watch pornography, engage in sexual activity through smartphone apps (especially late into the evening), obsessively checking for text messages or Likes, having your smartphone always turned on and always answering calls or texts, or using the smartphone to help pacify fear – which often results in increased fear. These are some of the smartphone behaviors that encourage a chaotic lifestyle and imbalance Vata dosha.

Pitta imbalances are created by using the smartphone for sending violent text messages, participating in text messaging arguments as well as social media arguing and judging, watching violent videos on the smartphone, engaging in promiscuous or predatory sexual behavior through smartphone apps, or using the smartphone as a competitive tool. These are some of the smartphone behaviors that encourage a fiery lifestyle and imbalance Pitta dosha – and can also disturb Tejas in the mind.

Kapha imbalances are created by using the smartphone while sitting or lying down for hours on end, compulsive shopping via smartphone apps, eating while watching videos or using the smartphone for long periods of time, searching for love through smartphone apps, and using the smartphone to spy on others. These are some of the smartphone behaviors that encourage a lifestyle of attachment and imbalance Kapha dosha.

Much has been written about ayurvedic diet and lifestyle concepts for self-healing. The ancient ayurvedic texts teach us about the purpose of ayurveda and how to incorporate the wisdom of ayurveda into our life for our own self-healing. Smartphone addiction, and the behaviors associated with the addiction as described above, are contrary to the teaching of ayurveda because these behaviors do not promote health, longevity, and balanced doshas. As ayurvedic physician and teacher Dr. Vasant Lad so beautifully describes, “We postpone meditation and enlightenment but we never postpone our addictions. The moment there is a desire to smoke, people smoke. They never delay. But when there is a thought of meditation we say, it is too late. I have to go to the office. I will do meditation tomorrow.”1

According to Verizon Wireless, “every cell phone user is at risk of developing an addiction to their device. Whether it’s online games, social media, text messaging, or emails, there are many ways that smartphone apps attract users and make it hard to look away.”Verizon’s statement gives cause to acknowledge that it is likely there are some smartphone users working in the Ayurveda profession who are among the smartphone users engaging in behaviors associated with this type of addiction.

If you want to help balance your doshas and promote good health and longevity, EMF Ayurveda does not recommend using a smartphone. Instead, switch to a corded landline (not cordless). If you have a smartphone, please switch to a talk and text only cell phone. Limit your use of the cell phone to only 5 minutes per day as recommended by Professor Girish Kumar.3 Use the device only in case of an actual emergency and get in the habit of leaving the device turned off. This important lifestyle change will help you to more closely follow the teaching of ayurveda and help you to keep your doshas balanced.

Benefits of EMF Health & Wellness counseling include:

Ayurveda for Self Healing

The first step in healing your body and mind from harmful health effects caused by EMF's is to develop a healthy diet of nutrient rich whole unprocessed foods that are good for your unique bodily constitution and that help your body to detoxify from the free radical damage caused by exposure to harmful electromagnetic field radiation.

To help heal the body's EMF caused oxidative stress and free radical damage, it is important to focus on detoxification and rejuvenation. For this, the body and mind require:

For thousands of years Ayurveda has been teaching people to eat food good for their unique constitution and for their own self-healing. Foods that we may believe are healthy to eat for one person may actually cause adverse health effects in another person due to the individual differences in Prakruti - the unique bodily constitution established at the time of conception (also known as a person's DNA blueprint).

The next step in healing your body and mind from harmful health effects caused by EMF's is to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle and routine. The human body and mind are born from our planet and as such they thrive when in sync with nature. Ayurveda teaches the person to become rooted in a peaceful and calm lifestyle that promotes right thoughts and right action.

The human-made EMF's that power our electrified world often cause our bodies and minds to fall out of sync with our planet and with nature. AC electricity has made it possible to create homes, buildings, and cities that take people away from their true self and their healthy relationship with nature. Modern electrical inventions have created conveniences and certain life-promoting benefits, however, the price for this "progress" is typically a life of high stress, depression, anxiety, and addiction. Ayurveda teaches to live a balanced life free from stress, free from depression, free from anxiety, free from poor health, and free from addiction.

EMF Harmful Health Effects

"We know that there is a massive literature, providing a high level of scientific certainty, for each of eight pathophysiological effects caused by non-thermal microwave frequency EMF exposures." Dr. Martin Pall, Ph.D

According to Dr. Martin Pall, the scientific literature shows that EMF's:

1. Attack our nervous systems including our brains leading to widespread neurological/neuropsychiatric effects.

2. Attack our endocrine (hormonal) systems.

3. Produce oxidative stress and free radical damage, which have central roles in essentially all chronic diseases.

4. Attack the DNA of our cells, producing single strand and double strand breaks in cellular DNA and oxidized bases in our cellular DNA. These in turn produce cancer and also mutations in germ line cells which produce mutations in future generations.

5. Produce elevated levels of apoptosis (programmed cell death), events especially important in causing both neurodegenerative diseases and infertility.

6. Lower male and female fertility, lower sex hormones, lower libido and increased levels of spontaneous abortion and attack the DNA in sperm cells.

7. Produce excessive intracellular calcium [Ca2+]i and excessive calcium signaling.

8. Attack the cells of our bodies to cause cancer. Such attacks are thought to act via 15 different mechanisms during cancer causation.

Other EMF Health Effects

Other health effects associated with EMF (AC electric fields, AC magnetic fields, and Dirty Electricity) and RF radiation are:

EMF Physiological Damage

Physiological damage and changes associated with EMF (AC electric fields, AC magnetic fields, and Dirty Electricity) and RF radiation are:

Healing EMF radiation exposure

In addition to the stress of electromagnetic field radiation, many daily habits are closely associated with oxidative stress, which is augmented by smoking, drinking, drugs, smartphone addiction and other addictive behaviors, negative thinking, and an irregular diet.

Oxidative stress is defined as a “state in which oxidation exceeds the antioxidant systems in the body secondary to a loss of the balance between them.”  (Yoshikawa and Naito 2002)

To help heal the body's EMF caused oxidative stress and free radical damage, it is important to focus on detoxification and rejuvenation. For this, the body and mind require:

What type of cancer from RF?

"An important lesson that should be learned from the NTP studies on cell phone radiofrequency radiation is that we cannot assume any current or future wireless technology is safe without adequate testing."- Dr. Ronald Melnick, Ph.D. Senior Toxicologist National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, National Institute of Health.

Health effects associated with radio frequency (RF) microwave radiation from wireless technology (cell phones, cordless phones, cell towers, bluetooth, WiFi, baby monitors, and all wireless devices) are:
